CPEC – A big vote of confidence from China
In a recent discussion on the China-Pak Economic Corridor (CPEC), Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed called the Belt and Road Initiative’s flagship project, a “special vote of confidence” given to Pakistan by China. He believes that the undertaking of the $62 billion mega project which focuses on industrial, agricultural, infrastructural and social development in Pakistan is no trivial matter.
He explains that the 2 primary issues which have become the basis of the China-Pak alliance are as follows: First and foremost is the need for better regional security in the Asia-Pacific region through strategic ties and strong military presence. And second, the need for better economic ties and investment into infrastructure, industry and social sectors for greater development in the region. The CPEC project has made it clear that China has placed its largest bet on its neighbor and all-weather-strategic-partner and ally, Pakistan. He says that it is now Pakistan’s responsibility to safeguard China’s interests within its borders and protect the CPEC project from efforts to delay or derail it, referring to the recent increase in terrorism within the country.
Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed, who has himself worked on several key projects with China, says that our friendship with China runs very deep and they have always taken our side and helped us through difficult times. He gives the example of the aid China provided Pakistan in the form of PPE equipment and vaccines during the global Covid-19 pandemic. Not only this, but he also mentions the development of the energy sector in Pakistan and claims that one-third of Pakistan’s energy needs are currently being met via new power projects launched in the first phase of CPEC. Many of these projects are state-of-the-art and intentionally designed to end Pakistan’s energy crisis once and for all.
